About Ryan

Why did you choose this program?

I chose to study philosophy at Cal Poly Humboldt because I wanted to enhance my critical thinking skills. Through the study of philosophy, you get the opportunity to learn from thinkers throughout all periods of history, and from different cultures as well. Whether it is the Greeks, the existentialists, or the scientists, the study of philosophy casts a large net on the history of human thought.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

Studying philosophy at Cal Poly Humboldt prepared me to take the LSAT, which helped me get into law school. Additionally, the program helped prepare me to be able to read and understand complicated cases and the issues that are brought by the law. One of my areas of study while at Cal Poly Humboldt was philosophy of language. Issues in language are omnipresent in the courtroom. Courts are constantly arguing over ambiguity and the definitions of certain concepts. Having a background in philosophy has helped me tackle the issues that are presented in law school.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

There are a number of wonderful classes that were offered at my time at Cal Poly Humboldt, including philosophy of India taught by Mary Bockover, Philosophy of Time taught by John Chandler, or Existentialism taught by John Powell, just to name a few. Through the philosophy program that is offered, I was able to learn from a number of other disciplines as well. I enjoyed being able to learn and study so many different subjects.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

Choose this program if you are interested in honing in on critical thinking skills and want to have a better understanding of the human condition and the problems of the world. You will learn new and interesting ways of thinking that will help you later on in your life, no matter what you choose to do post-graduation. The skills that you have learned from studying philosophy will help you become a well-rounded human being and a better thinker.
