About Rose

Why did you choose this program?

I always knew that I wanted to major in English Literature, and I loved the idea of living in beautiful Humboldt County, so HSU was a great fit. The English Department faculty at HSU is such an interesting group of people with varied experiences and areas of expertise.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

The HSU English program taught me critical thinking, careful and intentional reading, and analytical writing, which was incredibly helpful in law school and continues to be helpful as a practicing attorney.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

The people! I am still in touch with a number of faculty members, some of whom were kind enough to write letters of recommendation for me when I was applying to law schools. I have great affection and admiration for my former professors in the HSU English department, and I have remained good friends with many of my fellow students.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

When I was at HSU, it was mainly known as a science school, particularly in disciplines like forestry. I wasn't sure if it was a good fit for an English major, but my reservations turned out to be totally unfounded. The English Department is comparatively small, but that's the best part. The opportunities for mentorship and personal attention from my professors were so valuable to me. I'd always rather be part of a small, passionate group of interested and interesting people rather than be a tiny part of a big crowd. The English Department is large enough that everyone can find people who they click with, but small enough that you can really get to know your professors and your peers.
