Forestry Technician

Employer: Green Diamond Resource Company

Job description: After graduating from Humboldt State University in 2017, I landed a job working as a forestry technician for Green Diamond Resource Company. l feel grateful to have a career in the field I studied. I predominantly work in areas from Orick, California, up to the Oregon border. To put it simply, my job is to assist several registered professional foresters in timber harvest plan layout and design. This includes, but is not limited to: classifying watercourses, hanging flags to designate different zones within the project areas, engineering roads for access, conducting archeology surveys, identifying wildlife habitat for protected species, marking trees for various silvicultural prescriptions, and the list goes on. I enjoy playing a role in managing the landscape as well as furthering my knowledge of the forest ecosystem. There is never a dull day when you are working in the woods.

About Richard

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

My advice for prospective forestry students would be to explore some of the many avenues the discipline has to offer. At Humboldt State University, I was able to discover what interested me the most and ultimately choose my focus. Deciding early on which concentration to go into is key. The forestry program at Humboldt State University offers a great spectrum of concentrations including: Forest Hydrology, Forest Operations, Forest Restoration, Forest Soils, as well as Wildland Fire Management. The forestry program is set up so that every student studying forestry will become exposed to each concentration a little throughout their degree, becoming a generalist. After taking a variety of courses and consulting with my adviser, I chose to concentrate on forest operations. I enjoyed earning my forestry degree at Humboldt State University and highly recommend exploring all of the paths forestry has to offer.
