About Nanette
Why did you choose this program?
I chose the Masters in Teaching Writing program at Cal Poly Humboldt because I wanted to continue my English studies from my undergrad, but I wanted to apply it to composition and education. The program not only offered opportunities to study literature, but also study composition and to work with students on improving their writing skills.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
As soon as I began the master's program, I began working in the writing center, first as a tutor. Then after a year, I became the student coordinator. This helped to build skills not only as a tutor, but as a teacher and an administrator. Most importantly, it set me up to be a graduate teaching associate and begin my teaching career while I was still in the program.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I loved tutoring and leading tutors; it became the focus of my master's project, and it has led to everything that I have done in my career so far.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
I would say that if you like English, but are maybe tired of just reading and analyzing all the time, this is a great way to continue working with language but to explore the aspects of it that apply to every other kind of writing that you might encounter later in life, whether it be in your major or your career.
