Physics, B.S. | Class of
Michael Ross
Postdoctoral Scholar
Employer: Center for Experimental Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics - University of Washington
Job description: As a researcher with the Eöt-Wash Group, I split my time between conducting torsion balance experiments that test the behavior of gravity and developing instrumentation for the LIGO gravitational wave observatories. Our group specializes in developing precision mechanical instrumentation which we design and build ourselves. As such, we dabble in a wide range of fields from mechanical and electrical engineering to optics and computer science. All in an effort to further our understanding of the universe.
About Michael
How did this program prepare you for your job?
My experience at Humboldt was indispensable to starting my career in physics research. The courses gave me a great foundational knowledge that more than prepared me for graduate school and working in the labs prepared me to quickly transition into cutting-edge research after graduation.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
The professors are not only some of the best physicists that I've met but are also genuinely nice people. And the class size was small enough that I got to personally know most of my professors.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
It's never too early to start research! Time spent in the laboratory or working a novel problem is never wasted.
