About Matthew

Why did you choose this program?

I chose Humboldt for its scenic location, small class sizes, and affordable cost.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

I learned so much at Humboldt through hands-on projects. The curriculum gave me a chance to sample many of the different areas in computer science (security, networking, algorithms, etc.) while also giving me a solid foundation in programming.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed the HSU campus immensely. It's small enough that you end up feeling like you know everyone rather quickly. That made it easy to make friends, and feel comfortable putting together study groups and learning in general. I think Humboldt is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I think it was such a great experience and a privilege to live there.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

If you go to Humboldt, make everything you can of your time there. Be proactive in your campus community and with your own learning. Think about what you are learning in your classes, and think about how you can apply that to your own interests. Also, here is the advice my grandma gave me, which was valuable to me while I was there: "If you have questions, always ask! The faculty is paid to assist you in learning, but they can't do that if you don't ask questions."
