About Luke
Why did you choose this program?
The size of the program appealed to me, including small classes and the opportunity for plenty of hands-on experience with The Lumberjack.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
It gave me the reporting and writing fundamentals—and the work samples—that I needed to find work in a newsroom.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
The faculty, especially Marcy Burstiner and Victoria Sama, who do a wonderful job bringing their professional backgrounds in television, investigative, and business reporting into the classroom. Burstiner, Sama, and others in the department teach journalism well because they've done it themselves at a high level.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
Dabble in all the different types of hands-on experiences the department offers, like The Lumberjack, the Osprey, and KRFH, to get a flavor for the types of mediums and work you enjoy the most. Also, be aggressive about pursuing internships. Having several internships at quality news organizations under your belt—and the clips to show for it—will give you a bigger advantage in landing that first job after graduation than just about anything else.
