Employer: Environmental Defense Fund, Oceans program

Job description: As a communications specialist for an international-scale environmental nonprofit, I combine the fundamentals of my journalism education with skills I've gained and from my first job in broadcast news: I write and copy edit, draft social media, pitch to reporters, help design materials, and so much more. Nonprofit communications is a great field of work for someone who enjoys the elements of journalism but wants to combine them with personal passions or values.

About Kevynn

Why did you choose this program?

I chose Humboldt State's Journalism program because it combined two of my favorite things: a dedicated focus on all things journalism, plus the beautiful outdoors! Working within the Journalism program helped me hone valuable skills that are essential for anyone who wants a professional career in media: strong writing, impeccable copy editing, team management experience, working under pressure, multi-tasking, and so much more. And, the news stories you get to tell up in Humboldt County are unlike what you encounter outside of the "Lost Coast."

How did this program prepare you for your job?

The Journalism program at HSU prepared me for a career in communications by giving me a dedicated safe space to hone my skills in writing, copy editing, management, and design. By participating in the student newspaper and magazine programs, I gained hands-on experience that helped me stand out as a young professional who knows a thing or two about media. The skills I improved while at HSU helped me get a foot in the door to transition from journalism to communications.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I most enjoyed participating in the newspaper and magazine programs, which were a team effort, made up of a diverse group of awesome, talented fellow students. Together we created publications we could be proud of and played a direct role in the stories we were telling about HSU and Arcata. Serving as a student editor, reporter, copy editor, and photographer with the Lumberjack and Osprey publications was so fun, and proved to me that the best way to learn, improve, and retain knowledge is to get hands-on experience!

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

If you're passionate about journalism, want to give it a try in a unique environment away from the "big city" and want a hands-on, team-focused environment, definitely consider HSU's Journalism program! Also, remember that while college is an invaluable stepping stone, it's but a few years that help build your professional future; considering skills like a secondary language, graphic or web design, or a niche scientific background are great ways to improve your chances of pursuing what you want once the commencement ceremony is over.
