Job description: A Data Engineer is a subset of Software Engineer that deals with the backend systems and data aggregation. Working either in the IT department to keep the systems working, or with Data Scientist to deploy models, or on actual products to validate the data flows quickly and correctly.
I work closely with the data science team to create/deploy models for the marketing department to leverage. I also work with analysts to create enterprise level data sets to assist them with their job. Since we have over 12 different sources, aggregating the proper data can be difficult so the engineering team is responsible for cleansing and creating the correct data sets.
About Chris
Why did you choose this program?
Mathematics had always been a passion of mine so it wasn't even a question on the major I'd pick.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
Set theory/graph theory is used in a day to day basis in my current position. Statistics and various tests are used on a weekly basis. The logic that was crafted with the classes at HSU are used constantly as I'm digging through billions of records and keeping track of the data flow.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
The instructors and curriculum are top notch. The talent HSU attracts are not only very intelligent but also very kind and understanding. The Mathematics department prepared me for my Masters program so well that I felt my Bachelors was more intense than my Master. Not to mention that HSU is located in one of the prettiest locations in the world!
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
I was blessed to have some of the best instructors of my life while I was at HSU. The opportunities to learn are endless and yet the classes are small enough you end up creating a lifelong network with your instructors and your peers. Some of my best friends were forged while attending HSU and came directly from the Math department. I would say the program is less like a classroom and more like a family! The bonds and relationships you will create will last a lifetime!
