Arthur Sanchez Jr.

Graduate Research Assistant

Employer: University of Delaware

Job description: As in many professional degree programs, my job is based on drafting and defending a thesis. My MS research focuses on the abiotic and biotic factors effecting fecundity and nest survival of the saltmarsh (Ammospiza caudacuta) and seaside sparrow (A. maritima). This is a multicollaborative effort of academic, federal, and nonprofit collaborators that makes up the Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program (SHARP).

About Arthur

Why did you choose this program?

Given that I have been a resident of coastal California most of my life, I chose HSU because I wanted to stay in California and also pursue a degree in wildlife. One of my community college professors encouraged me to attend an in-state 4-year college to save money and not pay out-of-state tuition.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

This program has prepared me for jobs in an array of different ways. First, HSU provided many workshops that are applicable to becoming a researcher. Through one of the workshops, I made a contact at the local bird observatory, Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory. Through my experience at HSU and HBBO, I gainedd a solid foundation in natural sciences and the technical skills to work as an independent biological contractor, which ultimately turned into the MS position I am occupying now. Furthermore, as a senior in the wildlife program, one must complete a senior or honors thesis showing that you can design a project and analyze data accordingly. This gave me a foot up entering graduate school, knowing how to draft proposals and manuscripts through my experience at HSU!

What did you enjoy most about the program?

One of the things I enjoyed most about the program is how well rounded they leave their graduates. Going through the HSU wildlife program allows you to build a foundation based in the wildlife sciences. Also, the friends I made in this program is another aspect I enjoyed about the program.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

In my opinion, there is not a better school to earn a degree in wildlife sciences. Enjoy the beautiful Pacific Northwest, take advantage of wildlife workshops, and enjoy the comradery established with your peers throughout your educational endeavors. Just soak it all in! You will not regret it, I promise!
