Art, B.A. | Class of
Ann Valdés
Associate Producer
Job description: I'm an Associate Producer (or AP)—a “below the line” producer. As an AP, my job is to support producers in shaping a program, whether it be aired on television, streamed on Facebook, or broadcast on IG Live. APs work hand-in-hand with producers on teams to carry out production.
About Ann
Why did you choose this program?
Throughout elementary, middle, and high school I was always in art classes. Choosing to major in art was a no-brainer, I had zero intention of majoring in anything else. I chose to have a double emphasis in art history and studio art because I really love working with my hands but also enjoyed thinking critically about art and its role in history.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
I earnestly believe that an art degree is incredibly flexible. As a result of my degree, I consider myself to be a visually literate person, which is incredibly important in television. "What B-roll works here? What's a funny beat? Who should we cast? What color sweater should the host wear?" These are just some of the visually-motivated questions we are asked on a day-to-day basis and I truly credit my art background for the success I’ve had since graduation.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I really love the faculty at HSU. I took advantage of the small class sizes and professors’ office hours. I feel like the art department faculty is really invested in their students and there are a lot of opportunities available for students.
