Why did you choose this program?
I chose the Spanish program because throughout my life I have noticed how the immigrant community struggles with obtaining resources due to the language barrier. Many resources, especially in Humboldt County, are only accessible in English and therefore, many Spanish-speaking families are left unaware about their children's education, their loved ones' health, food and housing resources, and other resources.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
This program definitely helped me expand my vocabulary as well as become a critical thinker. Although I am a native speaker, prior to this program my vocabulary was very limited to casual dialogue. After this program, I gained not only the vocabulary but the confidence to have conversations about how we, as a society, can make legal, healthcare, educational, etc., information accessible to Spanish-speaking families.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoyed being able to discuss topics about Social Justice in the classroom because there is so much history of oppression that many Spanish-speaking countries have faced. Also, I truly enjoyed creating close relationships with my professors and learning not just the material but also many life lessons from them.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
I encourage students who are thinking about this program to create those relationships with professors and their classmates and to apply their knowledge to their life outside of the classroom.
