About Adeline
Why did you choose this program?
As a first-generation child, I remember growing up with parents that didn't speak English. This caused my parents to struggle to fill out forms and documents for resources throughout my community. I decided on Sociology because I wanted to help diverse communities like mine find resources that can help their children succeed regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or religion.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
When I was studying at Humboldt I needed to complete an internship related to the sociology field. At that time Lori Cortez-Regan was my instructor and happened to be on the board for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Coast. When I reached out to Lori about struggling with where I wanted to do my internship she connected me with the Executive Director and I started my internship at that nonprofit. I loved working with their nonprofit and raising money for youth in the community. After graduation I moved to Orange County and found myself working for that same nonprofit. I believe that because my program had me do an internship it helped me prepare to work and collaborate with my community.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
What I enjoyed the most about the program was being able to connect with peers that shared similar backgrounds and struggles to mine. We supported each other through the program in hopes to graduate and apply our knowledge to make a difference in the careers we went to.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
If you are thinking of applying to Humboldt State, do it! There are some amazing teachers that will help you unlock your passion and guide you if you seek and ask for it. You will also meet lifelong friends that will support and push you to strive for even better greatness!
