Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Candidates to Visit Campus

July 7, 2017

To the University community:

I am pleased to announce that we will have three candidates for the position of interim Vice President for Student Affairs visiting campus on July 13 and 14.  We are working with the Registry, an organization that helps place interim appointments in senior leadership positions throughout higher education.  Many of you will remember that the Registry helped HSU find Theo Kalikow to serve as the interim Provost in 2015.  The candidates come to campus together and have staggered interviews with various groups on campus, including an open meeting with each of them.

Here are the candidates who will be coming to campus, in alphabetical order:

Dr. Wayne Brumfield has 25 years of progressive student-centered leadership in higher education, including 12 years of service as Vice President for Student Affairs at University of Louisiana at Monroe.  His experience also includes serving as a faculty member in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at the University of Louisiana – Lafayette and in multiple roles in admissions, recruiting, and enrollment management at public universities in Louisiana. He is just completing an interim appointment as vice president at the State University of New York at New Paltz.  He earned a B.A. in history at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL – Lafayette), an M.A. in history at Southeastern Louisiana University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Research and Counseling at Louisiana State University.  He is known for his collaborative style, his focus on cooperating across the university, and his emphasis on student success being a campus-wide responsibility.

Dr. José Rivera has served in a number of leadership roles at Del Mar College (Texas), including as Vice President for Student Services, interim Vice President for Instruction and Student Development, and Dean of Student Development.  He has been Dean of Student Development at Richard J. Daley College (Illinois) and in multiple roles at El Paso Community College, including Dean of Student Services, Director of the Mental Health and Human Services Program, Director of Cooperative Assessment of Experiential Learning, Coordinator of the University Year for Action, and a faculty member in the Human Services Department.  He earned a B.A. in sociology from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Master of Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University.  His leadership is characterized by strong communication, partnerships, and “Students First.”

Dr. Charlotte Tullos has 35 years of experience in higher education administration, including 26 years at the vice president level; she has worked at a variety of institutions, including Louisiana State University, Keystone College (PA), University of North Texas, and Central Washington University (where her titles included Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and Vice President for Student Success).  She has worked at another HSU, Henderson State University (AR), where she served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Vice President for Student Services, and professor of counseling in the School of Education.  She studied at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned a B.S. in Physical Education, Recreation, and Health and in Secondary Education, a Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance, and an Ed.D. in adult education and counseling psychology.  She is known for her energy, her advocacy for students, and the breadth of her experience.

We are fortunate to have these experienced leaders in student affairs who are interested in this interim role at Humboldt State.  All faculty, staff, administrators, and students are invited to attend the open meetings for the candidates on Friday, July 14, in the University Center Banquet Room.

8:30-9:30 a.m. - Dr. Charlotte Tullos

9:45-10:45 a.m. - Dr. Wayne Brumfield

11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. - Dr. José Rivera

The folders with their resumes and statements of interest are available in my office for anyone who would like to review them.

My thanks, again, to all the people who reviewed all the candidate files and provided advice to me about who we should invite to campus.  I hope many members of the University community will be able to meet these candidates during their visit.  My goal will be to collect feedback quickly and make a decision about an interim appointment before the candidates’ campus visit concludes.

With best wishes,

Lisa A. Rossbacher, Ph.D.
President
