Resolution In Recognition of the Value of HSU’s SCUBA Program for Current and Future HSU Student Enrollment
Adopted April 30th, 2007
Whereas, the HSU SCUBA Program is renown throughout the world-wide dive community and is responsible for contributing high caliber divers to the dive industry, and
Whereas, a SCUBA certification achieved at HSU enhances the probability of working in the dive industry within the first year of graduation, and
Whereas, HSU SCUBA attracts students from around the country to come here based on the reputation of the HSU SCUBA Program, and
Whereas, the HSU SCUBA Program is recognized as the highest caliber training in comparison to other dive training facilities, and
Whereas, the HSU SCUBA Program impacts multiple majors; currently this semester alone, twenty-four plus majors are represented by over 70 enrolled students, and
Whereas, HSU SCUBA Program brings together a diverse group of students who strive to achieve a collective goal of safe diving, which requires trust confidence and self-esteem, and
Whereas, 501 enrolled students at HSU signed a petition in support of the preservation of the HSU SCUBA Program, and
Whereas, 35 Students participating in the HSU SCUBA Program have documented the importance of the program to their major and their future career paths, and
Whereas, the leadership certification within the HSU SCUBA Program is an integral part of program dynamics and allows for its standard of excellence to be maintained, and
Whereas, the HSU SCUBA program is currently being considered for budget cuts that will negatively impact the opportunities the program offers, such as; reduction of leadership and recreation minors and relocating several SCUBA courses to extended education which makes them much more expensive and less attractive for future students, and let it be
Resolved, that HSU AS supports the continued integrity of the HSU SCUBA Program and recognizes that each class is a vital part of the program’s overall excellence, and further recognizes that removing the leadership minor would discourage new and continuing students from joining the SCUBA Program, and let it be further
Resolved, that the AS strongly urges the College of Professional Studies to seek out and implement strategies for coping with the budget cuts that do not diminish the integrity of the HSU SCUBA Program, and let it be finally
Resolved, that copies of this resolution be sent to the following parties: all HSU college Deans, the University Budget Committee, HSU President Rollin Richmond, all HSU Vice Presidents, the HSU Academic Senate, and local media.
