Dear colleagues,

I know that the University community is very interested in knowing how Humboldt State’s budget is shaping up for the 2015-16 fiscal year.  The short answer is that we don’t know the details quite yet, but we received some good news today.  Here is an excerpt from a message that Chancellor White sent to CSU leaders this afternoon:

Governor Brown along with the Speaker and Pro Tem are holding a press conference announcing an agreement on our budget request at a total of $97M above the Governor’s January budget (and $59M above the May revise).  All indications are this fully funds the Trustee-approved support budget that we submitted in Nov 2014 for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

More information later as we analyze the emerging details.

I want to thank the University Resources and Planning Committee (URPC) for the time and energy they put into developing the 2015-16 budget recommendation they gave to me in early May.  The shape of the state budget has changed multiple times since the URPC completed its work, but now that we know our preliminary allocation is unlikely to be reduced (which happened last year), we will be able to move ahead with finalizing the campus budget for 2015-16.

The additional funding is expected to be distributed to the campuses based on enrollment growth and “student success.”  We do not yet know what additional funds will be allocated to Humboldt State and what restrictions may be attached to them.

Greater clarity about the 2015-16 budget should unfold over the next few weeks, and I will send out another update to the campus after I have more information.  Meanwhile, the agreement among Governor Brown, the Assembly leadership, and the Senate leadership is excellent news.
