Sustainable Futures Speaker Series ~ Fall 2014

September 2, 2014
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Belinda Batten of Oregon State University as the first speaker in the Fall 2014 Sustainable Futures Speaker Series. She will speak on Thursday, September 4 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in Behavioral and Social Sciences Building room 166 (BSS 166) on the HSU campus. The title of her talk is “Catching the Wave and Rising with the Tides: Marine Renewable Energy at NNMREC.”

Dr. Belinda Batten directs the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC), a collaboration between Oregon State University and the University of Washington supporting wave, tidal and offshore wind energy research, development and testing for the United States. Dr. Batten is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University. Her research interests include computational methods for control and optimization, mathematical modeling, and dynamics and control of wave energy devices.

Off-shore wave and wind energy have great potential to make significant contributions to west coast renewable production in the decades to come. The Humboldt Bay region, in particular, has very strong off-shore wind and wave energy resources. Both of these technologies are at an early stage of development, and there are many questions to address and challenges to overcome if they are to reach their potential. Dr. Batten and her colleagues at OSU are playing a leading role in these emerging fields, and her talk should be a very interesting one.

We hope that you will join us. For future speaker series events, go to http://www.schatzlab.org/about/publications/speaker_series.html.
