Softball Wins Fourth CCAA Tournament Title, Tops Wildcats Twice

May 8, 2017

STOCKTON, Calif. – Humboldt State softball scored just 10 runs in the first three games of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, but the Green and Gold bats stirred up 13 runs Sunday en route to the team's fourth conference tournament title. The Lumberjacks defeated Chico State 5-3 in the first game and run-ruled the Wildcats 8-0 in five innings in the championship clincher.

HSU advances to the NCAA West Regional Tournament and will face Cal Baptist Thursday, May 11 at noon in Chico, Calif.

A pair of RBI doubles in the seventh inning of the first game broke up a 3-3 tie and forced another showdown between the two Northern California teams. Tiffany Hollingsworth and Kalyn Paque were responsible for the run-scoring hits.

Madison Williams started both championship round games. She allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out seven in the game one victory.

Wildcats' ace Haley Gilham did not start the finale and her absence was noticeable as the Jacks (38-13) plated three runs in the first versus freshman Samantha Mulock. Mulock pitched 0.2 inning and took the loss.

Breonna Bejaran opened the scoring with a two-run double and Illa Haley followed suit with an RBI double of her own to put the Green and Gold up 3-0.

Fielding miscues by the Wildcats (37-16) extended the third inning and allowed the Jacks to add to their lead. Paque scored on a throwing error by catcher Lorren Sharp, and Haley slugged a two-run homer to centerfield.

Paque added a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Williams picked up her 20th victory of the season in game two. The Brentwood, Calif., native baffled Chico State batters surrendering just two hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Four Jacks earned CCAA All-Tournament honors. Paque was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Williams, Haley and Robert were named to the All-Tournament Team. Paque had a .625 batting average with 10 hits, seven RBI and two home runs in tournament play.
