Rob Smith Steps Down as HSU Football Head Coach

ARCATA, Calif. – After a decade leading the Humboldt State football program, Head Coach Rob Smith stepped down Friday.

“The Humboldt State campus and community would like to thank Coach Smith for his years of service,” said interim Athletic Director Duncan Robins. “We wish Coach Smith the best in his future endeavours.”

Smith, a four-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015) with the Lumberjacks, compiled a 63-44 mark in his nine seasons at HSU. He led the Green and Gold to a pair of GNAC Championships (2011 and 2015) and guided the program to its first postseason appearance since 1968 and first home playoff game since 1960.

During Smith’s tenure the Jacks received unprecedented national attention earning a national ranking in every season since the 2010 campaign. He coached 74 First Team All-GNAC selections, five First Team All-Americans, 2015 Harlon Hill Trophy Runner-up Ja’Quan Gardner and 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl participant and four-time GNAC Offensive Lineman of the Year Alex Cappa.
