Now Gmail is even more secure!

March 21, 2014

Effective March 20, 2014, Gmail will always use an encrypted (HTTPS) connection when you check or send email. Gmail has supported HTTPS since the day it launched, and in 2010 HTTPS became our default. This change means that there is zero possibility anyone can access your email—no matter if you're using public WiFi or logging in from your computer, phone or tablet.

You'll find more information at Google's update center.
