Math Colloquium and Kieval Lecture ~ March 24

March 21, 2016
Hello, Math Students and all interested parties:Please join us this week for the Mathematics Colloquium:Thursday, March 24, 2016 4 p.m. BSS 166"Tensors and Their Eigenvectors"Eigenvectors of square matrices are central to linear algebra. Eigenvectors of tensors are a natural generalization. Dr. Sturmfels will present an introduction to this theory.AND 67th Harry S. Kieval LectureThursday, March 24, 2016 7:30 p.m. Science B Room 135"Mathematics of Antibiotic Resistance"A recent project with the Barlow Lab at UC Merced was aimed at developing anti-biotic treatment plans that can reverse the evolution of antibiotic resistance. A key contribution was the “time machine” we built using linear algebra and probability theory.Dr. Bernd Sturmfels is Professor of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at UC Berkeley. His many honors include a Sloan Fellowship, an Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Prize, and an Einstein Fellowship in Berlin. His current research connects computational algebraic geometry to problems in statistics, optimization, and biology. Don't forget coffee, tea and goodies at the Pre-Colloquium Tea at 3:30 in the 3rd Floor Open Area in the BSS building. There will also be a pre-Kieval Lecture meeting with the speaker in BSS 408 from 5:00 to 7:00.Here's the schedule:3:30 Pre-Colloquium Tea - BSS 3rd Floor Alcove4:00 Mathematics Colloquium - BSS Room 1665:00- 7:00 Open meeting with Dr. Sturmfels BSS Room 4087:30 Kieval Lecture - Science B Room 135 For the complete abstracts, please go tohttp://www.humboldt.edu/math/news-and-events/math-colloquiumandhttp://ww...
