The Forestry and Wildland Resources Department is happy to announce the final guest lecture in the 2018 L.W. Schatz Forestry Seminar Series:
Tree mortality, uncertainty, and forest conservation in the West
Speaker: Dr. Phil van Mantgem is a Research Ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Arcata, California. Dr. van Mantgem's research interests include forest dynamics, fire ecology, and the management of forested ecosystems. Since 1995 he has been studying (and enjoying) forests in California and beyond.
Topic: Tree mortality is a key process that shapes forest populations. Yet our understanding of tree mortality is poor in spite of its influence on important services provided by forests, such as soil stability, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration. In this lecture the audience will learn about the latest research on tree mortality, how patterns of tree mortality appear to be changing in the western U.S., and potential management responses to these changes.
