LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WANT TO SHADOW YOU ON THE JOB

December 11, 2013

Humboldt State University has a wonderful opportunity to help Arcata and Six Rivers High School students to explore the world of work.  I want to encourage you to participate in the Job Shadow Morning in March.  Now is the time to sign up to provide a 3-hour opportunity for a high school student to observe you on the job.

Nationally, more than a million students will participate in a Job Shadow program this year.  The local goal is Job Shadow placements for 100 high school students.

Humboldt County employers are being recruited to host students for a three-hour (8:30 -11:30 a.m.) Job Shadow on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

The Morning in March Job Shadow will allow high school juniors and seniors the chance to experience firsthand the conditions, skills, and knowledge required to work in a trade, business, profession or government job.  The Job Shadow is a valuable, real life experience that starts young people thinking about their futures, the types of work they prefer, and how to achieve success in the workplace.

The Morning in March Job Shadow is a fun and powerful opportunity for students, and is particularly important to offer to prepare them for today's challenging economy.   This will also be an opportunity for local high school juniors and seniors to be exposed to higher education and the wide variety of employment opportunities at Humboldt State University.

The Job Shadow host commitment is from 8:30 to 11:30 A.M. on Wednesday, March 12th.    Students will be responsible for their own transportation and arriving on time.   Employer hosts will be given information to prepare for their students, including guidelines, goals, and the student interview questions.

If you are willing to host one or more high school students in your department, please contact Career and College Center Coordinator, Jim Ritter, at jritter@nohum.k12.ca.us or 825-2424 or 498-2917 as soon as possible.  The deadline is January 15.

If you are unable to participate in the Morning in March Job Shadow, you can still support the Arcata High School Career & College Center, by attending the Arcata High School Pancake Breakfast on the morning of December 14th, and contact Jim Ritter about how you can share your profession in other ways with students.
