Launching eLearning 101 for Spring 2016

November 16, 2015

Greetings College Deans and Department Chairs,

The eLearning team at HSU has developed an online orientation for students new to the online learning environment, eLearning 101.  We conducted a small pilot this current semester which has been very successful for those who completed the orientation.  eLearning 101 is now available to all HSU students, staff and faculty for the Spring 2016 semester.  Anyone with the link can self-enroll; there is no CRN, units, nor credit associated with this orientation. We welcome you to self-enroll if you would like to preview the structure, content, and activities. Please share this information with your instructors, especially those teaching online or hybrid courses.  We encourage those teaching online and hybrid courses to include a link to eLearning 101 in their course as a graded or extra-credit activity to improve participation, however this is at the discretion of the instructor.

We have developed a communication for faculty which you are welcome to copy and send out to your instructors.  We will send this as a follow up email with the subject, eLearning 101 for Instructors.

eLearning 101 is designed to be a stand-alone orientation that we expect students will complete in 2-3 hours.  It may take longer for some students, including English language learners.  The orientation consists of 7 modules that focus on college success skills and technology skills relevant to the online environment. Once students complete eLearning 101 they will receive an eLearning 101 Achievement Badge and a Certificate of Completion.  The Badge will automatically post to the student's Moodle page, and the Certificate can be downloaded and saved. This orientation is voluntary, and will be facilitated by HSU eLearning staff members, Pamela Dougherty and Terri Georgopoulos.

eLearning 101 is designed with the following goals in mind:
  1. Provide students who are new to HSU, Moodle, and online learning with an opportunity for hands-on experience with the learning management system
  2. Improve success rates in undergraduate online courses by preparing students in advance
  3. Introduce students to college success skills such as time management, study skills, etc...that are relevant to both online and traditional classrooms
  4. Help students locate support services and resources on campus

You can access eLearning 101 here: http://learn.humboldt.edu/course/view.php?id=1696

Please note that students can self-enroll to complete this orientation even if they are not yet enrolled in an online course.  This can prepare them for future courses, or simply introduce them to college success skills.  Student support services on campus will be receiving this information as well. Please forward this to anyone you think may be interested, or who may benefit.

We welcome your feedback, recommendations and questions.  Please contact:  Pamela Dougherty, 707.826.3644, pamela.dougherty@humboldt.edu

Thank you,

Pamela Dougherty and Terri Georgopoulos
