HSU’s Oliver Wins Second CCAA Female Track and Field Athlete Award of the Season

April 26, 2016

SAN RAMON, Calif. – Humboldt State's Ariel Oliver has been named the Female Track & Field Athlete of the Week for her performance last weekend at the Southern Oregon Raider Invite, the California Collegiate Athletic Association announced Tuesday.

"Ariel Oliver has been great for us," said Head Coach Scott Pesch. "It's hard to change places, make those adjustments, and do as well as she's done. For Ariel to come to Humboldt her first season and get CCAA Athlete of the Week twice is quite the accomplishment."

Oliver becomes the only CCAA female athlete to be recognized twice, and gives the Lumberjacks back-to-back Athlete of the Week Awards. Alyssabeth DeJerez received the conference's weekly honor for the week of April 11-17 and Oliver from March 7-13.

The junior transfer continues to shine in her first season with the Jacks. The Green and Gold thrower won both the discus and the shot put finals at this weekend's Southern Oregon Raider Invite, with her distances hitting the NCAA Division II Qualifying Marks in both events. In the discus, Oliver improved on her 45.15 meter mark in the preliminaries with a 45.51 meter mark in the finals. No other athlete recorded a distance over 37 meters in the event, while Oliver had three throws of 43 meters or further. In the shot put, Oliver again won both the prelims (13.88m) and the finals (12.94m) to end the final meet before CCAA Championships.

"Not only is Ariel leading by example, but she is a captain-type athlete for our program," said Pesch. "She works hard and she deserves it. She is making her mark on not only or school history, but on the conference as well."

The Lumberjacks travel to the CCAA Championships May 5-7, hosted by Cal State LA.
