Gmail Attachment Issues - What You Need to Know

November 17, 2017

The campus has been experiencing problems with Gmail messages with attachments larger than 10MB not reliably arriving at their destinations, resulting in the following:

  • Error: Delivery Incomplete. There was a temporary problem delivering your message to username@humboldt.edu. Gmail will try for 47 more hours. You’ll be notified if the delivery fails permanently.
  • Error: Recipient inbox full. Your message couldn’t be delivered to username@humboldt.edu. Their inbox is full or it’s getting too much mail right now.
  • No error message displayed, so the sender has no idea whether the email has been received.

If you recently sent a large attachment to someone and have not received an expected response, you should check with the recipient whether they actually received the email.

ITS is working with Google to identify and implement a long-term solution. In the meantime, anyone wanting to send an attachment larger than 10MB should instead upload the file to Google Drive and send the email using the attachment from Drive. Here’s the Google support document describing how to do this.
