A Fond Farewell to Chief of Staff Denice Helwig

December 22, 2016

Denice Helwig, Chief of Staff, has announced her plans to retire at the end of this year.  Please join me in wishing her all the best and in thanking her for a job well done.  Her background and experience at Humboldt State were very helpful to me in ensuring a smooth transition upon my arrival.

As Chief of Staff to the President of Humboldt State for the past 14 years, Denice has supervised many administrative units, including Faculty Personnel Services and Human Resources, Athletics, Research and Sponsored Programs, Public Affairs, Diversity and Compliance, Budget Office, Division of Enrollment Management (Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid), Graphic Services, Division of University Advancement, First Street Gallery, Natural History Museum, and KHSU.  She has also been responsible for legislative and government relations for the University.  She most recently stepped in as the Interim Director for the Center for International Programs and chaired a successful search for a new director.  She has served as the primary point of contact with University and outside counsel for all lawsuits and other legal issues on campus. She is the founding Director of the California Center for Rural Policy, an institute that now raises more than $2 million annually.

I will be evaluating the needs of the University over the next few months, and I will not immediately post the Chief of Staff position.

Denice’s experience, perspective, and institutional memory are an invaluable part of HSU.  Please do join me in thanking her and wishing her well in her future endeavors.

With best wishes,

Lisa. A. Rossbacher, Ph.D.
President
