EcoSeries Thursday, September 8th: Katherina Gieder

September 7, 2016
Hello folks!Come one, come all to EcoSeries this Thursday September 8th at 4pm in WDFS 258: our very own Katherina Gieder will be giving a talk entitled "Back to the Future: Using the past to understand sea-level rise effects on Piping Plovers". Here is the abstract for her talk:"Barrier islands are vitally important for humans and many wildlife species, including the federally-listed Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus). Barrier islands continually change in response to storm activity and sea-level rise, but efforts to stabilize these islands, such as artificial sand dunes and jetties, influence the way these islands respond to storms and sea-level changes. In the face of significant sea-level rise in the next century, forecasts of habitat change that incorporate these dynamic response of barrier islands will improve conservation of imperiled species like the Piping Plover. I will describe a system of predictive models that used historical Piping Plover nesting data to link changes in nesting habitat to dynamic barrier island response, and then present nesting habitat forecasts under several scenarios of sea-level rise and beach stabilization measures.":See you there!
