Ebola: Being Prepared

October 10, 2014
Dear Campus Community,

Recent news related to the Ebola outbreak in Africa has led to questions about how we might respond if the disease affected us here at Humboldt State University.

I want to assure you that our campus is well-prepared. We have a plan in place for a coordinated campus response to any risk of a dangerous disease reaching our region. The Student Health Center deals with infectious diseases routinely, and firm protocols are in place for specific concerns. Its Infection Control Committee, in coordination with the HSU Department of Risk Management & Safety, oversees health center operations, and drills which cover appropriate use of protective equipment and isolation gear are performed according to accreditation standards.

Though there is very little possibility that Ebola would spread to our area, it is important for all of us to have heightened awareness of this situation. Stay well informed by referring to the Center for Disease Control website (www.cdc.gov), be mindful that media hype may alter information, and above all remain calm to the situation.

The Student Health Center and HSU Department of Risk Management & Safety will continue to monitor updates from the federal, state and local levels to keep you apprised as the situation changes.

Best regards,

Mary Grooms VanCott
Director, Student Health & Wellness Services
