Cory White Named HSU Football Interim Head Coach

January 29, 2018

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State Interim Athletic Director Duncan Robins announced that Cory White will serve as the Interim Head Coach of the Lumberjack football program.

"Today I am excited to announce that Coach Cory White has agreed to take on the role of Interim Head Coach of the Humboldt State football team," said Robins. "While Coach Smith has been out, Coach White and I have been working together to keep this program on track. Coach White's dedication to the program and leadership as 'acting head coach' during this turbulent time helped me easily identify him as the right person to fill the current void."

White has served as the program's offensive line coach since the 2015 season and has 14 years of college football coaching experience at every level – FBS, FCS, DII DIII and JC. In two seasons at HSU, White has coached one of the top offensive lines in DII, one that included four-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year Alex Cappa. Cappa earned All-America honors in each of White's two seasons, and Cappa represented the Green and Gold at the 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl. In total, White's offensive line garnered seven All-GNAC awards during the 2016-17 seasons, and the line blocked for Ja'Quan Gardner who rushed for 2,622 yards and 39 touchdowns over the last two years.

"I would like to thank the President (Dr. Lisa Rossbacher) and Duncan Robins for allowing me the opportunity to step into a position I always dreamed about," said White. "It is an honor and a huge responsibility to be the next football coach at Humboldt State. This is a place that was so influential on my life as an alum and a Lumberjack."

Before joining the HSU coaching staff, White was the director of football operations at Division I FBS New Mexico State from August 2015 to July 2016. His duties with the Aggies included working with the tight ends and special teams, coordinating team travel and evaluating recruits.

He spent the 2014 season with Chapman University (Calif.) as the assistant athletic director and assistant football coach. While at Chapman, White served as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. He helped lead Chapman to its first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, NCAA playoff appearance and a final Division III ranking of 17th in the nation.

Prior to Chapman, he worked for two years as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego. He spent the 2013 season as the Toreros offensive line coach and the 2012 campaign as their tight ends coach. During his time as San Diego, White helped the Toreros to back-to-back Pioneer Football League titles (2012 and 2013) and a final FCS ranking of 24th nationally. He began his coaching career with stops at Chapman (2008-12), San Diego Mesa (2006-07) and Whittier (2004-06).

White wore the Green and Gold during the 2002-03 seasons and earned his bachelor of arts in social science education. He earned his master of arts with an emphasis in education in 2006 and a master's degree from Whittier College.
