THE CANVAS CLOCK IS TICKING DOWN FAST

May 16, 2017

Now is the time to join your peers in Canvas for Fall 2017. Courses are loaded and faculty has already been enrolled into those courses to allow time to complete revisions to course content and get more comfortable with using Canvas. Approximately 90% of summer courses will be taught in Canvas and, beginning with Fall 2017, 100% of HSU courses using a supported LMS will be taught in Canvas.

With the final migration to Canvas, students will no longer have to switch back and forth between two different systems, providing a more stable and streamlined learning experience. Access to teaching in Moodle will no longer be available after the end of the summer, but you will still be able to retrieve your course materials through the end of Fall 2017, so export your course content now, because it will get a lot more complicated later. For spring or summer course content, please use a secure repository such as Google Drive to save your exported Moodle content for later access and import into Canvas spring or summer course(s).

Starting with the Fall 2017 semester, Fall and Spring courses will follow term dates, opening one week before the beginning of term and locking courses in a read-only state three weeks after the end of term. However, content - course or student data - can be downloaded at any time for active users (ie, logged into Canvas in the previous 30 days) from their account in Canvas. For Summer courses, the term will open two weeks before the first day of classes; the locking process is the same as for Spring and Fall.

Courses will be automatically created in Canvas approximately 14 weeks before the beginning of each spring term, 10 weeks before each summer term and 22 weeks before each fall term to give faculty time to enhance their curriculum based on any new pedagogy standards. Students will be enrolled one week before the beginning of term. Faculty with students who have incomplete grades in either Moodle or Canvas can now manage those students in Canvas, which provides a more seamless experience for the students.

Don't forget that Canvas has an easy-to-use mobile app and can be accessed from anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection.
