Redwood Jazz Alliance—Humboldt Native Michael Moore on Tues, April 15

The Redwood Jazz Alliance spring season continues Tuesday, April 15th at 8 p.m. at the Morris Graves Museum of Art with a concert by the Michael Moore Quartet, presented in partnership with the Humboldt Arts Council.  Known for his virtuosity, his expressiveness, and his beautiful tone on clarinet, the multi-reedist is also a prolific composer with more than two dozen albums to his name.  Though based in Amsterdam, where he has been a mainstay of the Dutch improvised music scene for over thirty years, Moore has an international reputation, with Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader asserting that he has “established himself as one of the finest jazz musicians working anywhere, either in the mainstream or the avant-garde.”  The Penguin Guide to Jazz, meanwhile, opines that “Moore seems so much his own man that there’s no critical language large enough to contain his expressive range.”

Moore certainly needs no introduction to many North Coast music fans: the son of CR music professor Jerry Moore, he and brother Gregg were at the center of a Eureka circle in the 1970s that saw the formation of groups like The Persons and Joint Session.  Michael left for the New England Conservatory, studying under Jaki Byard and Gunther Schuller, and eventually both siblings relocated to Europe, where Michael became a key member of the legendary ICP Orchestra and a leader of influential bands like Trio Clusone and Jewels & Binoculars.  While he may well be a Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition (as the DownBeat critics poll has put it, more than once), musicians on both sides of the Atlantic already appreciate Moore’s talents.  Over the years, Michael has played and recorded with groups led by RJA veterans Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, Mark Dresser, and Fred Hersch, among others.  Last summer, the iconoclastic saxophonist and MacArthur “genius” John Zorn invited Moore to program a week-long residency at The Stone, Zorn’s celebrated East Village performance space, and a veritable Who’s Who of New York’s hippest improvisers lined up for a rare chance to play with him.  Asked last year by NPR to name five clarinetists “whose work has enriched [his] life,” Bay Area multi-reedist Ben Goldberg included Moore for his “seamless, liquid tone” and his gift for haunting melodies.

This tour marks the North American debut of Moore’s “Dutch” quartet, which has recorded three albums for his Ramboy label.  The group includes one other former local, the inventive drummer (and longtime Moore collaborator) Michael Vatcher, along with young pianist Harmen Fraanje and bassist Clemens van der Feen, both natives of the Netherlands.  The quartet’s playing is, in the words on one critic, “warm and subtly subversive,” informed by the jazz tradition, but always willing to go wherever the music leads.  Moore himself describes its repertoire as “a heady mix of American jazz and European improvised music…wild and delicate, with occasional Indonesian, Brazilian, and African influences.”

Michael Moore will also present a pre-concert workshop, free and open to the public, on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 15th on the HSU campus (exact time and location TBA).  More information about the Michael Moore Quartet, including streaming music and video, can be found at RedwoodJazzAlliance.org.  Advance tickets ($15 General Admission, $10 Students & Seniors) are available online at Brown Paper Tickets and at Wildberries, Wildwood Music, People’s Records, and The Works.

The RJA’s 2013-14 season concludes with a co-presentation (with Center Arts) of violinist Regina Carter’s “Southern Comfort” on April 29.  More information about the entire season can be found at http://www.redwoodjazzalliance.org/2013-14.html.

The Redwood Jazz Alliance is a 401(c)(3) non-profit charity dedicated to jazz performance and education by touring artists of national and international renown.  With the aid of local businesses, professionals, and individual members, and in partnership with the Department of Music at Humboldt State University, as well as the Humboldt Arts Council, the Arcata Playhouse, Center Arts, and other units of HSU, it is concluding its eighth season of concerts and educational workshops.

Walking in Two Worlds—April 10

Local Filmmaker Walks Between Two Worlds

Eureka CA - On Thursday, April 10, Local Filmmakers Night screening presents: “Walking in Two Worlds,” an evening featuring works of local filmmaker George Nelson. Nelson, influenced by both Native and American cultures, is the owner and operator of War Pony Films. His Native themed films focus on education and social change. The event will take place at the Eureka High School Lecture Hall (Humboldt and K Sts.).

George Nelson found his passion for filmmaking while attending Hoopa High School. His first documentary film was a short presentation on the 1955 flood that ravaged the Hoopa Valley. On this project, George piece together old 8mm footage that was shot by his grandfather during the flood, and new footage George had recorded on a VHS camcorder.

Nelson pursued a BA in film at Humboldt State University, utilizing his GI Bill and enjoyed working on film projects with many local filmmakers and he learned a lot from their experience and creativity. While at HSU, George produced the film noir clips that were used in the musical “The City of Angels.” These film clips won George an award for Cinematography from the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. In 2010 George also had an opportunity to work on a local commercial shoot for Leon’s Mufflers as the Director of Photography which won a Telly Award.

George currently works at the Hoopa Education Department as a Mentor and Adviser to Native students and continues to work of his films.

Following the screening, attendees can enjoy Q & A session with the filmmaker, movie trivia, prizes, and a reception at Access Humboldt's Community Media Center.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Screening starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person and all are welcome to attend.

Local Filmmakers Night, a collaboration between Access Humboldt, Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission and Eureka High School Media Club, is a screening series that supports and promotes the local film community.
