Background Check Policy Update – Student Workers

August 24, 2017

Dear Colleagues:

The Chancellor’s Office has provided additional guidance on background check requirements for students.

As stated in the most recent background check policy revision, student workers are required to undergo a background check if it is required by law. The CO has clarified that student workers with access to Level 1 Data are also required to undergo a background check.

Level 1 Data includes (but is not limited to):  PINs (Personal Information Numbers), tax IDs with name, Social Security Number and name, health insurance information, biometric information, electronic or digitized signatures, and private keys (digital certificates). For more information, refer to ICSUAM’s policy on Information Security Data Classification at https://csyou.calstate.edu/Policies/icsuam/Documents/8000/8065_FINAL_DRAFT_Data_Classification_CW_V4.pdf.

Please note that HSU also requires students who are driving on university business to undergo a Motor Vehicle Record check.

The full Background Check Policy is posted here:
