2015 HSU Athletics Hall of Fame Class Announced

ARCATA, Calif. – Five individuals and one team will be inducted into the Humboldt State Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2015 on Friday, Oct. 9. The Hall of Fame event will be part of the weekend's homecoming celebration.
 
This year's honorees include the 1995 softball team, Tom Farmer (track & field), Apple Gomez (softball), Audrey Oswald (track & field), Devin Peal (men's basketball) and Lizzy Prescott (softball). The Class of 2015 will also be honored at halftime of the homecoming football game versus Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 10.

1995 Softball Team
 
The Lumberjacks finished third in the nation and compiled a 53-10 overall record. HSU lost in the semifinals to eventual national champion Kennesaw State (4-3). The team defeated UC Davis in the West Regional championship to advance to its second-consecutive national championship tournament. The team won the NCAC title with a 19-5 record. There were four All-America selections on the team: Jennifer Fritz (first base), Apple Gomez (shortstop), Anetra Torres (outfielder) and Kelly Wolfe (pitcher).

Tom Farmer, Track & Field, 1962-65
 
Farmer finished first at the collegiate regional meet in the triple jump in 1965 and ranked fourth in the nation in the event that season. He placed second in the Far Western Conference championships in the triple jump (1965), third in the FWC championships in the long jump (1964) and second in the triple jump at the FWC championships (1963). He ranks second all-time in the triple jump (47'4" in 1964), sixth in the long jump (23'6.25" in 1964). His daughter, Suzi Farmer, was inducted in the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994 (women's basketball).

Apple Gomez, Softball, 1992-95
 
Gomez was an All-American and All-Region and the NCAC Player of the Year selection for the 1995 HSU softball team. She earned First Team all-NCAC in 1992, 1994 and 1995 and a Second Team all-NCAC selection in 1993 as an outfielder. Gomez was the first player in school history to hit 10+ home runs and steal 10+ bases in the same season. She was among the nation's leaders in batting average (.426, 70th) and home runs (11, 22nd) during the 1995 season. Gomez was offensive leader and outstanding shortstop for the first two teams to ever win West Regional titles in HSU softball history (1994 and 1995) – the teams finished second (1994) and third (1995) in the nation. Gomez' name appears throughout the HSU record book. She holds career marks with 174 runs scored (seventh), 49 doubles (sixth), 8 triples (10th), .376 batting average (seventh), 44 stolen bases (10th), 37 sacrifice bunts (fifth); and single-season totals of 63 runs scored (third, 1995), 92 hits (third, 1995), 21 doubles (second, 1995) and a .685 slugging percentage (sixth, 1995).

Audrey Oswald, Track & Field, 2006-08
 
A three-time All-American (2006, 2007 and 2008) during her time at HSU, Oswald ranks as one of the top throwers in program history. She was a CCAA champion in hammer throw in 2008 and 2007 and the GNAC champion in hammer throw in 2006. Oswald was also named the CCAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2008. She holds the program record in the hammer throw (190'3" in 2008) and the GNAC record for hammer throw during a conference championship (178'10" in 2006).

Devin Peal, Men's Basketball, 2006-08

Peal was a pivotal cog in the Lumberjack squads that captured back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association championships and reach the NCAA West Region Tournament in 2006-07 and 2007-08. He was the CCAA Player of the Year in 2007-08 and was a First Team All-CCAA pick in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Peal was a Third Team All-American in 2007-08, a Division II West Region Player of the Year in 2007-08, a First Team All Region selection in 2007-08, a First Team All-District choice in 2007-08 ad was selected to NABC/NCAA Division II All-Star Game (2007-08). He ranks fifth all-time in career total points (1,362), eighth in career rebounds (545), and fourth in career field goals (527); 10th all-time in single-season total points (529 in 2007-08) and eighth in field goals (209 in 2007-08). Peal led the CCAA in scoring (18.6) in 2007-08.

Lizzy Prescott, Softball, 2005-08
 
Prescott was arguably the best pitcher in program history. She was a three-time All-American (2006, 2007 and 2008); a four-time All-Region selection (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) and the Regional Pitcher of the Year (2007 and 2008). Prescott was the GNAC Pitcher of the Year in 2006 and a two-time CCAA Pitcher of the Year (2007 and 2008). She earned First Team All-GNAC honors in 2006, Second Team in 2005 and First Team All-CCAA accolades in 2007 and 2008. Prescott was also tabbed the CCAA Female Athlete of the Year in 2008. She pitched three consecutive shutouts to close out 2008 national championship, including a game that went 17 innings. Prescott holds CCAA records and HSU records for career shutouts (51), career strikeouts (1,101), single-season starts (56 in 2008), shutouts (20 in 2008), innings pitched (410 in 2008), wins (48 in 2008), strikeouts (452 in 2008) and complete games (44 in 2008). Her name is etched in the NCAA record books for single-season appearances (first with 63 in 2008), games started (second with 56 in 2008), complete games (15th with 44 in 2008), innings pitched (second with 410 in 2008), wins (third with 48 in 2008), shutouts (15th with 20 in 2008) and strikeouts (fifth with 452 in 2008).
