Preparing for the Fall Semester
Preparing for the fall semester can be filled with questions and a little anxiety. To ensure an easy transition, the HSU Housing + Residence Life office suggests planning ahead. Here are some tips for making the process as smooth as possible.
- Student ID card. If your student’s a new freshman or transfer, encourage them to upload a photo for their ID card before arriving on campus to save time on move-in day. If they upload a photo by July 10, their card will be waiting for them at check-in. » For instructions on how to upload a photo.
- CCARD. Your student’s ID card (or CCARD) also doubles as a campus debit card, which can be used to make purchases at participating campus locations like the Depot, Bookstore, computer labs and residence hall laundry machines. You can load the card before they arrive on campus at ccard.humboldt.edu.
- Immunizations. Before arriving on campus, remind your student to submit proof of their immunizations to the Student Health Center to prevent any holds on their account. Measles is required for everyone and Hepatitis B is required for students under 19 years old. » For more information on immunizations
- Parents & family lodging. If you’re planning on staying for a few days, book your accommodations early. » For suggestions on local hotels, bed and breakfasts and other accommodations.
- Off-campus housing. If your student is planning to live off-campus, they can still take advantage of the meal plan options offered through Dining Services. For information regarding meal plans, please visit humboldt.edu/housing/dining/mealplans.html. Preparing for Fall Move-In
- Know your student’s check-in time. To minimize crowding, the Housing office will assign your student a specific check-in time prior to fall semester. All freshmen students should plan on checking in Tuesday, August 18 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Transfer and returning students should plan on checking in Tuesday after 6 p.m. or later on in the week. More information regarding check-in times will be sent in July.
- What to bring and leave behind. Encourage your student to pack a few things that make them feel at home. These might include posters, and photos of friends and loved ones. Other things they’ll want to bring: bedding and linens, a mattress pad, towels, laundry supplies, a computer, and a study lamp. Don’t forget that your student can order linens before arriving campus through Forever Humboldt (see below for more information). They may also want to ship items like luggage, trunks and bicycles to their room in advance. Just make sure they wait until August 1 and use the address in their room assignment email.
For more information on move-in and other guidelines for living in the residence halls, visit the Housing website or call (707) 826-3451.
