HSU Starter Kit

Main Newsletter Story

Depending on where your student is coming from, Humboldt State will take some adjusting. Even returning students can forget all about Humboldt’s unusual weather after a long summer.

Here’s a checklist of essentials:

  1. Raincoat - Humboldt weather is wet … usually.
  2. Sturdy, water-resistant shoes - rain, puddles, and forest walks await.
  3. Layers - It should be in the 60s for the first few months, but it gets chilly. Bring a warm hat, gloves, hoodies, etc.
  4. Reusable water bottle and coffee mug.
  5. Bike, helmet, and a good lock.

Look for more starter kit ideas and advice on the HSU Parents & Family Network.

Join the Family Network

Our Parents & Family Network is a great place families to connect, share, and discuss all things Humboldt. Seek and share advice from other families of first-year and returning students on what to expect, and how to prepare for another year at Humboldt. Visit to register or login, ask questions, and see what other people are saying about their students’ experience.

Moving in

Move-in Day for HSU Residence Halls can be busy, stressful, and emotional. Come prepared by knowing when and where to check in, what to bring, and parking regulations. Housing & Residence Life has details on Move-in Day so you can get your student settled in.

Getting Here

If you’re driving or your student is traveling by bus to Humboldt State from afar, keep in mind that it can be a long trip. We recommend you pack food, as dining spots and grocery stores get sparse in the last few hours before you reach Arcata. The Arcata Transit Center station is about a mile from campus, and there’s a city bus that connects to campus. Plan ahead by checking road conditions and giving yourself plenty of time to travel. For detailed directions to HSU as well as other travel information, visit

The First Few Weeks

Your student will have a lot to get used to at the beginning of the semester. Welcome Home to Humboldt is a month-long series of events and activities to help them acclimate, meet people, connect with campus opportunities, and unwind.

All Welcome Home to Humboldt events will be listed on the HSU Events Calendar. Students (and families) can browse featured events, look at events by category (such as Athletics or Student Life), and search for events. It’s a good idea for students to become familiar with the HSU Events Calendar and check it regularly.
