Making the Move Off Campus Go Green When Moving Out Volunteers Needed at HSU Commencement Ceremonies

Making the Move Off Campus

Looking to take some of the confusion out of moving off campus? Humboldt State’s Housing & Residence Life can help. Students can drop by the office Monday-Friday, 8-5 p.m. to get help with taking this big step.

“We walk through how to complete rental applications, how to evaluate potential rentals, discuss how living here on campus gives students valuable rental history, set landlord expectations such as co-signers, income verification and how to fill out rental applications,” says Elizabeth Tellez, Housing staff member. “Landlords and property managers will likely look at your credit, and many freshmen have never gone online to pull their credit reports, so we help them with that, too.”

HSU also has resources online for students making the move off campus. The website includes free information on local rentals and a bulletin board to help find a roommate.

One thing Tellez wants students to be aware of is that May is probably the best time to secure housing for fall. Many upperclassmen are moving out and there are spaces available. But be prepared to pay a hefty deposit or rent to cover the summer months. “The rule of thumb is that you pay when you sign the lease.”

Go Green When Moving Out

Moving out is hard enough. There’s also the added challenge of what to do with all the extra stuff your student accumulated during the year. What to do? First off, know that leaving unwanted goods in “free piles” can be a nuisance and stress the resources of campus and the city.

Luckily, students have options when it’s time to move out. Through Donation Dash, students in the Waste Reduction and Resource Awareness Program (WRRAP) are helping on-campus students make environmentally-friendly decisions when disposing of their unwanted goods.

From May 11 to 14, WRRAP students will operate donation and waste drop-off locations near the College Creek, Creekview, and the Hill residence halls during move-out week to assist HSU students in recycling, composting, and donating unwanted items from their dorms. While many items will end up in thrift stores, used office supplies will be donated to the campus’s Reusable Office Supply Exchange, and unopened, non-perishable food will be given to HSU’s food pantry or the Humboldt county food bank. Your student’s donations make a difference--every year, Donation Dash keeps over 2,500 pounds of waste out of the landfill.

Donation Dash Hours:

  • Wednesday, May 11: 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 12: 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Friday, May 13: 8 a.m.-12 a.m.
