Nutrient Cycling
The following terminology should be part of your working vocabulary:
| biogeochemical cycle | nutrient |
| turnover | nutrient pool |
You should be able to do the following kinds of things:
- Diagram a generalized nutrient cycle and its relationship with the energy flow in an ecosystem. All important features should be labeled appropriately (see Figs. 9-5, 11-3, 11-12, 11-13, 11-15, 11-18).
- Describe in some detail a nutrient cycle of your choice. You should incorporate such features as the nutrient pool, important forms of the nutrient in the cycle, organisms involved, and factors in the physical environment which are important in regulating the cycle.
- Describe with diagrams, the water, carbon and oxygen cycles.
- Discuss differences between temperate, deciduous forests and tropical rain forests that account for the striking differences in the success of agriculture in these areas (see Chap 12).
