The Humboldt Juggling Society put on its first annual juggling festival. This festival took place at the Manila Dunes Community Center. The purpose of the festival was to celebrate the art of object manipulation and to raise money for the Vagabond Players Children's Theatre. The festival expenses were partialy covered by an Associated Students grant and from an individual's donation of the spaghetti feed groceries. The total money raised for VPCT after all expenses was $1,100. This money will be going to VPCT's summer production of "James and the Giant Peach."

The three day festival included free workshops, games, competitions, a Club Renegade show on Friday night, a Public Juggling Show on Saturday night (emceed by Rudi Galindo), and 4 juggling supply vendors (Renegade Juggling, Serious Juggling, Golden Jester, and Neon Husky.) It also included a delicious spaghetti dinner on Saturday night and an all night "Rave" juggler's dance on Saturday night, put on by LightBright Productions, after the Public Juggling Show.

One hundred and forty jugglers registered at the festival's welcome desk, though it is estimated that over the three day festival there were around 200-300 people who participated in some form or another. Traveling jugglers came from all parts of the west coast. This map shows the distance people traveled to come to our festival.

In the tradition of many of the other well known festivals, Walter Beals drew up a t-shirt design. The front of the t-shirt carries the linear drawing of two redwood trees passing lumberjacks and chainsaws. On the back of the shirt are the words "First Annual, Humboldt Juggling Festival, Manila Dunes Community Center, Arcata CA, March 30th - April 1st 2001."

One of the reasons for our success was the eagerness of the local media in covering the festival before during and after the event. Both the Eureka Times Standard and the Humboldt Beacon covered the event. Also KHSU and KMUD radio stations interviewed Walter Beals about the festival. Another form of publicity that was beneficial to the festival was a short television spot with Joel Agnew on Fox 29.

Much fun was had by all, as evident in these images. We all hope that this festival will become a long living tradition of Humboldt County, so that many years from now we can look back at this festival and be proud for having established the tradition.
