Some of you may have recently experienced delays with your registration for classes and membership. A combination of a new registration system (with some new kinks), furloughs and hiring freezes have presented challenges to everyone at HSU. We appreciate your patience and understanding. A special thank you goes to Linda Hall Martin, OLLI Assistant, who has worked tirelessly to catch up with processing registrations as quickly as possible.

OLLI yearly membership runs from August 1 through July 31. Fees for 2009-2010 have increased by $10 and are now $35 per person. Join with a friend or partner for $20 more.
This summer HSU OLLI will apply for its fourth and final $100,000 grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation.
In 2010, HSU OLLI will be eligible for a $1 million endowment, which would provide a perpetual funding stream. The principle of the $1 million endowment would be invested to provide yearly operating funds of 3-5 percent, or $30,000-$50,000 annually.
Since this will result in a loss of at least half of the current OLLI operating funds, HSU OLLI needed to increase its membership fees. It will also need to maintain a strong membership base, increase class participation, and look for additional support.
The OLLI advisory team is working to establish a “Friends of OLLI” fund to help ensure the continued financial health of HSU OLLI. The team is also planning to expand the scholarship fund, which will provide additional financial assistance to those OLLI members in need.
With your continued support and participation in the HSU OLLI program, we are confident that lifelong learning opportunities will remain a vital part of our community.
Looking for a gift for the friend who has everything? Share your love of learning and support the work of HSU OLLI by buying your friend an OLLI yearly membership gift certificate. Call 826-5880 to learn more.
Congratulations to OLLI member N. P. Tarpey for winning the North Coast Journal Flash Fiction contest. Tarpey was a student in John Daniel’s creative writing class last fall. His winning entry is available on the North Coast Journal website.
