John Steinbeck:
The Voice of the Left Coast

Nobel Prize author John Steinbeck uniquely captures our coastal region in such works as In Dubious Battle and his short stories.

Our discussion will explore Steinbeck’s process of composing In Dubious Battle. Written during the Depression, it was a time of despair. Class tensions heightened issues for both the right and left and eventually led to the transformative event of December 7, 1941.

From this novel through World War II, Steinbeck’s work was the voice of the nation’s consciousness.

Please read the novel in preparation for this class.

In modern times, the effects of loving and losing can deeply influence individuals, families and lifestyles in many ways. Most people want to have a solid relationship to experience the joys of companionship, affection and loyalty.

What are the social and personal influences that affect our ideas of romantic love in our youth, and later in life?

If you are over 50, who are you now – mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually?

Celebrating Differences

Do you ever wonder if your children, partners, neighbors or in-laws are actually trying to torment you when they keep doing those things that drive you crazy?

Do your New Year’s resolutions to change your bad habits fizzle after a couple of weeks? Do you think that you’re giving perfectly clear directions, but some folks just never understand them?

We’re continually challenged by differences in perspectives, styles, beliefs and feelings – in our communities, our homes and families. It is clear we need to understand, and learn to value and capitalize on these differences.

“Typewatching” explains normal differences between healthy people using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, the most widely used personality tool in the world with 50 years of research behind it.

This course will inspire you with useful insights about your strengths, about fundamental differences between people, and creative actions to close the communication gap. We’ll laugh while we learn, too.
