Personal Statement:

I bring 25 years of active practice as an attorney, and training as a mediator, to my teaching at HSU. In light of my experience in working in the community, I believe that a university education should build employment skills, as well as teaching theory and transmitting information. To this end, most of my classes emphasize development of practical skills such as negotiation, oral and written communication, legal research and case analysis.

As a longtime resident of the North Coast, I am grateful every day to live in a place of such spectacular beauty and abundance. I am an avid birder, native plants enthusiast and outdoor recreationist, so focusing on environmental issues is a natural extension of my value system.

In my work and scholarship I focus on full and equal public participation in developing public policy, on environmental justice, on civil and human rights, and on creating collaborative communities.

In particular, I believe that it is crucial to understand the social, political, and economic context in which policy-making occurs, so that we can more effectively advocate for wise and sustainable policy choices.

Teaching at HSU is a privilege, particularly as our relatively small classes enable a real dialogue between instructors and students, and between students in the classroom setting. My experience with HSU students is that we share a love of learning and a passion for justice, and that many of us share common goals for environmental protection and restoration. I enjoy the give and take of the classroom, of the quest to truly understand the ramifications of the choices we make. To me, teaching and learning should engage the spirit as well as the intellect. Every semester I learn something new from my students, which makes teaching a genuine pleasure.
