How to Apply
Requirements

Completion of official HSU application for graduate study at HSU (request copies by calling the Office of Research and Graduate Studies at 707-826-4402, or apply online via the Grad Studies website)

Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended

3 letters of recommendation (on letterhead)

Satisfactory grade point average (not less than 3.0 or B)

Scores from the general test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last 5 years

A representative sample (no more than 15 pages in length) of your academic writing

Additional Statement of Purpose
Please note that the English Department requires a more complete "Statement of Purpose" than is possible in the small space provided on the standard Graduate Studies application form. You should use a separate sheet or sheets and write a short essay (no longer than two pages, single-spaced) in which you do the following:

    1. Describe your personal background and your educational development.
    2. Discuss your academic and career goals and explain how participating in the graduate English program at Humboldt State University will help you achieve them.

Please note: This essay, your writing sample, and your letters of recommendation should be mailed directly to the HSU English Department (below) . They will be used by the Graduate Committee to learn more about your interests and strengths, including the quality of your writing.

Note: All materials become the property of the English Department at Humboldt State University and will not be returned.

Deadlines

The deadline for submission of all materials (including GRE scores) for consideration for the Fall class is March 1st. For inclusion in the Spring class, all materials must be submitted by November 1st. These dates are the deadlines for materials to be received by the English Department Office, not the date postmarked.
