Introduction to Regression Analysis

Introduction to Regression Analysis

Overview: Regression analysis allows for the prediction of outcomes. Given two variables, we can predict score on one (Y) from the other (X) if we know their linear relationship (i.e., the correlation between the variables).

Goals: This set of tutorials will help you understand the vocabulary, logic, and basic mathematics of regression and correlation. Special attention will be given to the relationship between plots and calculations, and the influence of extreme scores on correlation/regression.

What do I need to know? You should know how to interpret a scatter plot of X and Y scores. The Review of Prerequisites covers basic concepts that will help you with the modules.

What do I need? A calculator will be helpful. We recommend that you download a hard copy of each module that you use. A link for downloading is provided at the beginning of each module. Your instructor may provide a hard copy for you. Check with your instructor regarding what sections of the tutorial you should use if this is an assignment for you.

NOTE (7/16/03): We are completing a major revision of this tutorial. We have broken the tutorial into modules and added a new section on calculations (Module 1). Currently, we offer downloads of Word files only. PDF versions of these files are coming soon.
