GEOGRAPHY ACTION!
For more than a century, the National Geographic Society has fostered awareness of the world’s diverse cultures and environments. The tradition continues with Geography Action! , an annual awareness program that helps educators promote geographic fluency in schools and communities across the United States and Canada.

GEOGRAPHY ACTION 2009! Mapping Europe
Geography is a critical component of a 21st century education, and National Geographic is working to raise awareness so that all students have opportunities to know and understand their planet. Each year the Geography Action! program offers tools and resources for educators to bring geography to life through school and community events. You can participate and raise awareness by using these materials for a school or community event any time of the year, or during Geography Awareness Week, November 15-21, 2009.
The newest toolkit, Geography Action! Mapping Europe, is now available for free download for use for classroom activities, awareness events, and after-school programs. Find all you need to build a huge wall or floor map of Europe, as well as in-depth activities for grades K-12. Download the toolkit, tile map, and Europe support materials by visiting National Geographic's Geography Action! site

GEOGRAPHY ACTION 2008! Mapping the Americas -

Teachers—take your students on a journey across the Americas, from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego, with Geography Action! Mapping the Americas. Get the whole school involved in creating a jumbo-sized map of the Americas that's so big it can cover the side of a school building or the floor of the cafeteria. Map builders will learn about the cultures, climates, landmarks, and critical issues found in the diverse countries of the Americas.

Download the Geography Action! Mapping the Americas Toolkit (PDF) and get the jumbo-sized map along with activities, games, and tips for planning a highly interactive and festive event for students, families, and communities. The activities and games in the toolkit are easy, fun, and educational. Work with your PTA, local businesses, and your students to create a successful event. GEOGRAPHY ACTION! 2006 | Africa in 3-D
In 2006-07, the National Geographic Geography Action! program will focus on Africa. The program will feature the regional and cultural geography of "Africa in 3-D: Diversity, Demographics, and Discovery!"

Geography Action! themes will focus on the continents for the next several years, the result of which will be a world curriculum. Students are sure to be engaged by the spectacular landscapes, unique wildlife, and rich cultures of Africa, the first continent featured.

"Africa in 3-D" activities and lessons will be adaptable for all subjects, including science. The program launches in September and is geared for participation throughout the 2006-07 school year. The Geography Action! Web site will offer dozens of interactive experiences, as well as include ideas for creating your own African festival.

Mark your calendar for Geography Awareness Week—November 12-18, 2006—a great time to highlight Africa in the classroom, school, and community!

GEOGRAPHY ACTION! 2005 | Migration: The Human Journey
This year's theme, Migration: The Human Journey, encourages kids to explore and honor their diverse heritages. As they trace the migration stories of their communities, students will examine and photodocument distinctive features of their cultures, connecting their personal geographies to the greater history of human movement.

GEOGRAPHY ACTION! 2004 | Cultures: The Sound of Place
How do language, music, and other aspects of the auditory environment give voice to the history, movement, and interaction of peoples all over the globe? How would you capture the sound of your hometown? With toe-tapping zydeco music? The clang of a cable car? The honk of a car horn—or of geese? Geography Action! 2004—Cultures: The Sound of Place challenges kids to explore how language, music, and other sounds of their environment give voice to the history, movement, and interaction of people through time.
