Retention and Inclusive Student Success

August 19, 2013
Our top campus priorities are improving our retention and graduation rates and closing the achievement gap between our majority and historically underrepresented students. As President Richmond mentioned at Convocation, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs are bringing a number of student-support efforts together in a new unit focused on retention and inclusive student success. This new unit – Retention and Inclusive Student Success – includes the Learning Center, Advising and Career Center, Service Learning, our Educational Opportunity Program, our Native American student support programs, our freshmen mentoring program, the Multicultural Center and a new early alert system that will help us identify and provide appropriate services to students in need of additional support. It also includes multiple new Centers for Academic Excellence that will focus on providing culturally-relevant academic and co-curricular support for our students, with a particular focus on responding to the needs of underrepresented students. Implementation of these new centers will begin this year. An organizational chart for this new unit is available here.Under the leadership of Jacqueline Honda, Ed.D., this unit will coordinate our campus-wide student-support and retention efforts, including initiatives to improve advising. Their charge is to create the infrastructure and undertake specific actions that will help our campus realize these goals. In order to do this, they will need the cooperation of everyone on campus. In the coming months, Dr. Honda and others in this new unit will be reaching out to faculty and staff across the university in developing these strategies. We are confident that by working together, in a coordinated and focused effort, we can eliminate the achievement gap and help more of our students succeed. Thanks for helping Humboldt State University stay focused on inclusive student success.Sincerely,Robert A.
