TurnItIn Originality Monitor

Description

HSU uses Turnitin OriginalityCheck to teach proper citation and source integration, to address academic integrity, and to make investigating potential plagiarism easier.

The Turnitin originality report shows a paper’s text, highlighted with any text that matches sources found in the Turnitin databases. These databases contain vast amounts of web content, previously submitted papers, and subscription-based journals and publications. Turnitin helps educators and their students quickly make informed evaluations of student work and then move on to the important task of determining what students need in terms of instruction, correction or judicial action.

Additional Information

As an illustration of how widespread the problem of (frequently unwitting) plagiarism is, out of 5402 HSU student papers run through TurnItIn between March 13, 2002 and February 24, 2010, 1570 papers contained 25% or more unoriginal material , and more than 8% had over 75% unoriginal material.

Turnitin has partnered with Educational Testing Service to integrate the ETS® e-rater® grammar analysis tools in GradeMark, the TurnItIn online markup tool.

Accessing This Service

Instructors will need a special account code to open an account on the TurnItIn website. To get this code, send an email to help@humboldt.edu

Once you have the code, go to the TurnItIn website. In the upper right hand corner of the Turnitin home page, you'll see a "Create Account" link.

When you click the button, a wizard will appear that asks you a series of questions. When you select Instructor, it will ask for the Turnitin account/class ID and password you received in your HSU email.


Using This Service

The account code also enables students to use the software. Once an instructor has established an account and classes, you can create a series of assignments which your students respond to by submitting their papers. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to receive the originality results and you have the option to allow or not allow your students to see the results.

TurnItIn also includes the e-rater grammar tool to deliver automated feedback on grammar, style, mechanics, usage and spelling. This function should save instructors time while providing them with more effective feedback on the student writing process.
