System Status
Short-term guest accounts can be created for individuals and groups who do not have an HSU User Name to enable them to access the campus wireless network, library services, and open-access computer labs. Longer-term accounts are also available to consultants or outside contractors who need to access campus computing resources.
Guest accounts are available for up to 72 hours for individuals (extensible by request) and for a predetermined time frame for sponsored groups and conferences. Consultant and contractor accounts usually expire after six months unless a longer term is requested when the account is set up.
Requests for individual accounts are handled on a walk-in basis only; group guest accounts must be sponsored by someone with an official HSU affiliation. A current staff or faculty member must request consultant and contractor accounts.
Computers running Windows, OS X or Linux, as well as most smartphones, can be used by guests to access the HSU wireless network.
Note that campus security policy requires that any computer connecting to the HSU wireless network must be up-to-date on operating system patches and virus protection and must not be running peer-to-peer or proxy software; Windows systems must also have the Windows firewall enabled.
Account names will be in the following format:
Campus sponsors of group guest accounts must retain a record of contact information for all guests who are part of a group for a period of six months.
You may be asked to make a department-owned computer lab available to a guest-account holder.
To request a guest account, follow the appropriate procedure below:
Once guest account HSU User Names have been issued, passwords are issued as follows:
Guest account holders may access the HSU wireless network, library facilities, and open-access computer labs with their newly-created campus identity for the period specified by the account sponsor. The Technology Help Desk can extend long-term guest accounts as needed and short-term guest accounts for 24 hours at a time.
Anyone accessing the HSU wireless network must agree to download and install a small program called the SafeConnect PolicyKey to ensure that their computer meets HSU security requirements during the time it has network access.
Individual guest accounts must be requested in person at Library 120.
The application process for group, contractor and consultant guest accounts is on the web at http://www.humboldt.edu/its/forms-accountrequestform.
As part of the install process for the SafeConnect PolicyKey, guest users must agree to abide by the terms of HSU's Appropriate Use Policy.
