It's generally a good idea to wait until the third or fourth class. This gives the students enough time to get and register their clickers. You might want to ask students to email their clicker number to you. You can then start to integrate clicker use into classes gradually, using simple polls or question-and-answer formats as test runs; this has the added benefit of showing you whose clickers are registered and whose are not.
