Google Apps :: Mac Mail Setup

Mac Mail may be used as a standalone email client for GMail. If you've never launched and configured Mac Mail, follow the steps below to do that. You'll also need to enable and configure the Advanced IMAP Controls Lab in GMail, or you'll get multiple copies of mail in your All Mail folder.

First Time Setup of Mac Mail

Step 1: Launch Mac Mail

Step 2: Complete the Welcome to Mail screen:

  • Full Name: your name
  • Email Address: your full HSU email address [username@humboldt.edu]
  • Password: your HSU password

Click Continue.

Step 3: Fill out the Incoming Mail Server screen:

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Description: HSU Mail
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
  • User Name: your full email address [username@humboldt.edu]
  • Password: your HSU password

Click Continue.

Step 4: Fill out the Outgoing Mail Server screen:

  • Description: HSU Mail (outgoing)
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • User Name: your full email address [username@humboldt.edu]
  • Password: your HSU password
  • Make sure "Use only this server" and "Use Authentication" are both checked.

Click Continue.

Step 5: On the Account Summary screen, double-check your settings and click the Create button.

To verify your settings after you've configured your mail client, go to Mail > Preferences... and select the Accounts tab. The screen should look like this:
